Electric cars cut solar payback times in half

Electric car drivers could slash the payback time of installing solar panels to under five years.

Figures are based upon a 2.52kWp system installed on a domestic property, the panels are used to charge a Nissan LEAF.

Since installing the £11,500 system three months ago, the panels have generated enough energy to power 2,290 miles of the 2,680 miles driven during that time – around 85 per cent.

It costs about £150 to drive 1,000 miles in a petrol car and £37.10 in an electric car, but using figures for this solar-powered electric car, the same distance costs just £5.38.

If the average driver travels 12,000 miles a year, an electric car owner with a similar-sized solar system would spend under £65 on a year's motoring, saving £1,736 on petrol costs as well as raking in £1,055 worth of feed-in tariff payments.

These combined annual benefits mean the £11,500 system should pay for itself in around four and a half years rather than the average 10 years.

Is solar the future for energy production?

It is no longer credible to say that solar can’t play a major role in a sustainable energy mix. Deutsche Bahn intends to run the entire German railway system on wind, solar and hydropower. The German economics ministry has collaborated with German companies to run a scaled model of the national economy on a real mix of renewables, including solar, and concluded that a healthy modern economy could be run on renewables, including baseload electricity. In a report due out later this year, the International Energy Agency will admit that solar can provide 60% of global electricity by 2060.

It is not good enough to say, as some do, that if a global mass market is inevitable, the UK should sit back and partake come the day, not before. This is a strategic miscalculation. We do not want to be importing every aspect of our energy infrastructure ad infinitum. National security considerations such as peak oil increasingly demand that we have domestic industries that are as stand-alone as humanly possible.

In this respect there should be many opportunities for the government. The prime minister has emphasised the Big Society idea as a flagship programme of his tenure, and he envisions many of the jobs that must countervail the austerity measures will come from British participation in the green industrial revolution that he says is unfoldling around the world. Solar is an important part of that. Ask the Chinese. In 2000 they had little solar. Now every second solar cell is made in China. The government would not have to do much to fashion a Big Society/green industrial revolution case-history worth boasting about.

Around the nation, as things stand, thousands of jobs are being created in the embryonic British solar industry. Tens of thousands of citizens are in the process of being empowered in community projects. The cause of this is a solar-energy feed-in tariff: a market-enablement process used by over 40 countries around the world that entails premium pricing for solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity funded by a small levy on all energy bills. With its feed-in tariff introduced in April last year, the UK has belatedly joining the party in one of the fastest growing markets of any kind globally.

The opportunities extend well beyond solar. Solar generation would soon be marriable at scale with the energy efficiency measures due to be stimulated by the government’s Green Deal. Innovative integrated energy-services financing would become possible, unleashing substantial net energy cost savings.
Feed-in tariffs are supposed to decrease annually, as solar prices fall. That is part of their inate attraction. Unlike nuclear, solar does not need subsidising forever. But the staged reductions in tariff, down to zero within the decade, have to match the market. It is no good introducing sudden deep cuts. That stalls a market, as a number of governments have discovered this year.

The first reductions for UK rooftop solar PV tariffs will begin in April 2012, and are under review right now. The government has to get this just right. Reductions in tariff have to be deep enough to fairly reflect falling solar prices, and not too deep to stall the development of a domestic UK solar industry.

Ministers like Greg Barker and Chris Huhne understand. Others do not. They listen to the calls of the nuclear and gas industries, who among others lobby to slow or kill the solar rollout in multiple countries by cutting feed-in tariffs to the bone. In France, for example, the nuclear industry has all but emasculated the French solar feed in tariff, and hence market.

Creating a Big Society/green-industrial-revolution case-history worth bragging about will involve the government creating a smooth glide path to solar grid parity in electricity markets. This in turn will involve not listening to many of the lobbyists working for the big energy companies, and many civil servants too. They are too wedded to the past, and cannot see what Silicon Valley investors, and the Chinese see.

£7bn rooftop bonanza for British homes

As many as half of Britain's homes could earn around £600 a year from roof top solar panels with some earning as much as £1000.

Research carried out by British Gas suggests that over 12 million households have roofs that could benefit from solar panel installations which would produce enough electricity for up to half their household needs.

By cutting their electricity bill and earning money through the Government's Feed-in Tariff scheme - a scheme that pays owners of solar panels for the ‘renewable' electricity they generate - the average household would be better off by around £600 a year and those with bigger systems could benefit by up to £1000.

Collectively, British homes could be £7bn a year better off.

The market for solar installations and other microgeneration technology in the UK is expected to grow rapidly with the new Government support scheme. British Gas predicts that within a decade, one quarter of households will have small-scale microgeneration technology in their homes.

Solar energy will also enable millions of consumers to benefit from carbon savings. An average rooftop could save up to 692 kg of CO2 each per year. As a nation, this means we could make a saving of over 8.5 million tonnes of CO2.

Installing solar panels will create a regular, tax-free income for homeowners. Not only that but the income is index-linked and guaranteed by the Government for the next 25 years. As it typically gives returns of 5-8% it's potentially far better than most current bond or gilt investments. It is also a great way to keep your electricity bills down.

Solar power will revolutionise the way British homes generate and use energy. The time is right for customers to reap the benefits of this technology, cut their electricity bills, reduce their carbon footprint and earn a yearly income.

New UK government pledges to increase targets for renewables

The new UK coalition government has pledged to increase the country’s renewable energy targets.

A document outlining the basis of the Conservative-Liberal Democrat administration states: “We are agreed that we would seek to increase the target for energy from renewable sources, subject to the advice of the climate change committee."

Both the Tory Prime Minister David Cameron and his deputy, Lib Dem Nick Clegg, expressed support for a low carbon economy in their first press conference.

Cameron promised the new government would be "passionate about building a green economy", with Clegg outlining plans to ensure "fine words on the environment are finally translated into action".

There has been considerable unease in the wind sector about Conservative plans to abolish the Renewable Obligations (RO) scheme and replace it with a feed in tariff (FiT) for large scale renewables.

The Lib Dem position has been to maintain RO, although a party environment adviser says that "positions will be worked out jointly from now on" adding that "nothing has been decided yet".

In a pledge yet to be clarified by the new government, the document promises "the full establishment of feed-in tariff systems in electricity – as well as the maintenance of banded ROCs".

The text also promises a series of measures to support the development of a low carbon economy, which include:

- The establishment of a smart grid and the roll-out of smart meters
- Measures to promote a huge increase in energy from waste through anaerobic digestion
- The creation of a green investment bank
- The provision of home energy improvement paid for by the savings from lower energy bills
- Measures to encourage marine energy
- The provision of a floor price for carbon, as well as efforts to persuade the EU to move towards full auctioning of ETS permits
- Mandating a national recharging network for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Get a loan of up to £15,000 to green your house!

If you want to install solar panels on your roof and take advantage of lucrative new feed-in tariffs but have been put off by a lack of funds, you could soon get a loan to cover the whole cost.

This week the government unveiled plans to offer homeowners 20 year loans of up to £15,000 to allow families to invest in green technologies, safe in the knowledge that their loan would be taken over by the purchaser if they move before it's paid off.

This follows an announcement by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) that it will start paying feed-in tariffs (FiT's) to households installing green technologies such as electricity generating photovoltaic (PV) systems, which will set you back around £8,000 per kWp installed.

Households with south-facing roofs able to install a 4 kWp solar PV system will receive payments and savings totalling over £1,600 a year (Import savings £218.11 + FiT income £1390.16 + Export income £50.49 = £1658.76) from 1 April 2010.

Until now households wanting to introduce these carbon-reducing measures had to pay the upfront installation costs, or borrow the money, leading to accusations that they were only affordable for the well-off. Equally, spending thousands on solar power made little sense to anyone planning to move home a few years later.

The government has tried to answer both criticisms this week by introducing a pay-as-you-save (PAYS) scheme, which follows a pilot run in a number of cities.

- Although details of how the scheme will work are yet to be finalised we now have a rough idea:
The loans, typically between £10,000 and £15,000, are expected to come from commercial organisations rather than government funds. As well as the big six energy companies, Sainsbury's, B&Q, Co-op Bank and HSBC are among those expressing an interest.

- Once taken out, the loans would effectively become a charge against the house in the same way as a mortgage. They are expected to be paid back over 20-25 years, but, unlike a mortgage, if you move house before the loan is paid off, the new buyer would take over the payments. Of course, they also take over the savings, and any feed-in tariffs payable, which DECC says would always be greater than the repayments. It should make the home more attractive to any purchaser.

- The interest is yet to be determined – 6% has been mentioned, but as the loans will be coming from the private sector rates will reflect the market at the time. It is likely the rate would be similar to a long-term fixed-rate mortgage, typically 5%-6%. If you have lots of equity in your home, and you are remortgaging, you might find it cheaper to add the cost to your mortgage.

Households would be able to spend the money on a variety of technologies. Solar PV and Solar Thermal water heaters will be favourites, but so will solid-wall insulation which is aimed at homes that were built without cavity walls. It is much more expensive than cavity wall insulation, but can bring down energy bills significantly. Ground and air source heat pumps and wind turbines will qualify.

DECC says it is aiming for 7m households – owner-occupier and rented – to benefit by 2020. It wants to make the loans available to the widest possible group rather than just the well-off. It aims to have a single point of contact for those hoping to get a loan, pushing applicants to the most appropriate commercial supplier.

One option could see the power firms, which already have responsibility for paying the feed-in tariffs, also overseeing the loans and simply paying the customer the surplus at the end of each month. This would enable those with less-than-perfect credit histories to install carbon-reducing measures.
