UK government loses Supreme Court case against solar feed-in tariffs

The UK government’s doomed case against the challenge to its planned cuts of solar feed-in tariffs has been rejected by the Supreme Court.

The last ditch attempt by the government to overthrow previous decisions by the High Court and the Court of Appeal that its action to cut solar feed-in tariffs during the consultation period as “legally flawed” failed on Friday 23 March 2012.

The Supreme Court’s rejection of the government’s appeal marks the end of the legal wrangle and leaves the thousands of homeowners and businesses who installed solar panels after the 12 December cut-off date and before 3 March better off.

The lucky ones will now receive the higher FIT rate of 43.3p per kWh, instead of the lower rate of 21p.
Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey said he was “disappointed” that the Supreme Court did not to grant permission to hear the case, but said that the ruling “draws a line under the case”, which was instigated by his predecessor Chris Huhne.

“We will now focus all our efforts on ensuring the future stability and cost effectiveness of solar and other microgeneration technologies for the many, not the few,” he said.

Andy Atkins, the executive director of Friends of the Earth, which brought the challenge along with other solar installers, welcomed the ruling that the government’s “botched… solar plans are illegal”.

“[The] landmark decision which will prevent ministers causing industry chaos with similar subsidy cuts in future,” he added. “The Coalition must now get on with the urgent task of restoring confidence in UK solar power.”

Urban Energy Solar Thermal

Providing Renewable Energy solutions from solar thermal systems to heat pumps.

Urban Energy are renewable energy specialists with many years of experience in the domestic market place, we can offer design, supply and installation of:

Solar water heating systems
Heat pump systems

With our technical knowledge we will guide you through your renewable installation from the initial survey, design and fit. We carry out all the plumbing work, which is required to integrate these systems into your property including under floor heating and heating distribution system design.

We pride ourselves on our customer service and after sales customer support.

We also offer solar health checks, repair, fault finding and annual servicing on any solar thermal installation, which will be carried out by our qualified engineers.

Air Source Heat Pumps
Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the outside air and this is used to heat radiators, under floor heating systems and hot water in your home. Heat pumps work much more efficiently than a standard boiler system operating at a lower temperature, offering a co-efficient of at least 1:3 meaning for every 1kw of electricity used to run the heat pump it will provide at least 3kw of thermal heat energy.

Solar Thermal
We only install the highest quality equipment in our systems and can offer Evacuated tube and flat plate panels, which when fitted to a twin coil cylinder can provide up to 70% of your annual hot water demands.

The demands of mankind are increasing within our standard of living and the strains of our day-to-day consumption are exhausting our planets natural resources.

65% of our total water consumption is heated and over one year this amounts to a substantial energy cost.

The sun was described by Thomas Edison as ‘The energy of the future’ in the 1900’s and remains a viable and cost sensitive energy source today.

Solar water heating is an effective solution to help care for the environment we live in and save money on energy bills.

High efficiency heat and lighting from Urban Energy

High efficiency electric heating systems for homes and business!

The future of central heating in the UK will be based around highly efficient, slim line electric units. Urban Energy install the Dimplex heating range that offers the same experience as gas central heating yet with far greater controllability and lower running costs.

The Dimplex LPC range enables the user to control room temperatures at the press of a button and are the natural evolved replacement for the somewhat archaic storage heaters found in many UK properties. This new technology offers an experience like has never been imagined. Each LPC features an on-board thermostat, with built-in transceiver that can operate wirelessly with a wall-mounted remote control.

Optional wireless remote control can be provided which can operate one or more heaters. These state of the art heaters enable LPC convectors communicate through radio frequency to provide whole home comfort.

High efficiency LED lighting for homes and business!

Replacing inefficient halogen bulbs within your home or business with low wattage efficient LED bulbs can significantly reduce electricity use and expenditure.

Roughly 15% of a domestic household’s electricity expense is via lighting and for businesses this ratio of expenditure is even higher.

Traditional halogen lamps although very popular are a very inefficient light source. A 50W halogen bulb actually uses up to 75W of power, due to the transformer. They also have a very short life span meaning that regular bulb changes are required.

Urban Energy installs “Halers H2” lighting systems, which are designed to retain all of the positives of a halogen system, with none of the associated drawbacks. For instance at only 7.9W it uses approximately 1/10th of the power of a halogen (50W) installation. These bulbs are efficient, durable and have a 7-year guarantee.

Urban Energy offers both internal and external lighting solutions to both homes and businesses. Call our office today to arrange an appointment with one of our surveyors.
